A story development sketch from the Disney Studios animated musical masterpiece, "Fantasia" (1940). Featuring a stunning and highly detailed illustration of a startled centaurette from the "Pastoral Symphony" segment, the graphite drawing was created at the studio and used during the early development process. Albert Hurter and Martin Provensen both worked on the sequence and were inspired by the artwork of Arnold Bocklin, a moody symbolist painter, Franz Von Stuck, an art nouveau era artist, and Heinrich Kley, an illustrator and painter. However, throughout the animation process the centaurettes and centaurs became less realistic and took on a more comedic appearance. Measuring 10"x12" overall, with the character image measuring 5"x4", the drawing is in very good condition with minor edge wear, discoloration due to age and tape residue, and pin holes in the top corners from studio use.
